Aims & Objectives
AXIS provides a locally based, accessible and confidential counselling service for men and women aged 16 years or over. Counselling is provided on a face to face basis within a friendly, safe and secure counselling environment. The service is provided to clients on the basis of need, and is non-discriminatory, and no one is turned away.
AXIS was established in October 1993 to provide a service based on the following principles:
Clients as Individuals
Provides relief of suffering anxiety and stress and related psychological problems for adults who have suffered sexual abuse in childhood. Counselling relieves the effects of past traumas, enabling clients to feel less as a victim and gain control over their lives by increased self dependency and self choice leading to improved life expectations.
In particular, this will be achieved by the provision of counselling, but will also include the provision of information and training.
The resolving issue is to enable clients to develop insight and understanding of the enduring psychological and traumatic effects and thereby shift the focus from their role as a victim to establishing a clear sense of their own identity by taking control of their thoughts, feelings and actions.
To enable survivors to work towards stable and fulfilling relationships.
To reduce the risk of further abuse occurring.
Breaking the cycle of abuse.
To foster relationships with professional workers within statutory and other services and so develop good partnership working arrangements.
Family units/Relationships
To enhance and improve parenting skills
To enable to development of stable, long term relationships.
Contributing to the stability of any family unit or relationship by enabling the client to be motivated and able to adopt a positive role both within the family and the workplace.
