Axis counselling and psychotherapy service

For adult survivors of childhood sexual. physical or emotional abuse

Our Philosophy

An eclectic approach may be used to suit the individual client as we recognise that each survivor's needs are different. A flexible and respectful approach is employed that takes account of the uniqueness of the individual to achieve progressive and positive change. No hard and fast theoretical approach is used. A specific theoretical approach is not regarded as fundamental to obtaining a therapeutic outcome. However cognitive behavioural therapy has been found to be beneficial and has enabled particular clients to speedily move on. To enable the most effective outcome it is important that the clients feel safe and secure. The knowledge that the service is confidential and non stigmatising is beneficial.

The therapeutic out-come enables the survivor to develop an insight and understanding and so relieve them of the enduring psychological and traumatic effects of their past abuse.

The resolving issue is for survivors to lose focus on their role as victim and to establish a clear sense of their own identity by taking control of their thoughts, feelings and actions.

AXIS demands that a comprehensive policy of confidentiality is maintained. However, unconditional confidentiality is not given where risk to self or others is evident or threatened.

Counsellor/Therapists undergo a rigorous selection process. They are selected on experience, training and qualification, and their ability to carry out the work.

AXIS strives to maintain a high quality service. The implementation of the principles of clinical governance helps monitor the standard and quality of good practice.
